february Meet and Greet
After the long await, our GBLA members finally got to meet all of the students that would be competing on the day of the STEM Fair. Schools such as Huerta, Jefferson, Moffett, Buford, Felton, and LMS joined us as we got to know each student and all of their different skills through team building competitions such as tower building, car racing, and boat building! For more information, watch our project overview video.
February Team Building Activities
Planning phase
Working with GBLA and 6 different schools, we had 24 students volunteering to help teach the kids how to build their projects. All of the volunteers went to participate for 5 weeks and helped the kids.GBLA took time out of their day to assist the kids and help them learn something new. All of this took time to prepare to go after school and to get all of the materials ready to start building with kids. And all of this was very important because all of the volunteers had to be prepared to help the students as well as Mr.Rivas since most of the time he was helping prepare everything. Mr.Rivas was helping us plan for what we needed and how we can help this stem fair be successful. Working with Mr.Rivas helped us to be more prepared and ready to volunteer and teach these kids how to build their projects. Overall all of the volunteers working with the students did a great job of helping them to create their projects and explaining the project.
Our Volunteers
71 student volunteers committed to organizing the Lennox Stem Fair. The popularity of the February event indicated that GBLA students wouldn’t be able to handle the event alone, so we concluded that we would need more volunteers. We opened a Google Form for anyone who wanted to help with the event. We had help from the robotics team and many other Lennox Academy students. The set-up people got to the event around 7:30 am and helped decorate, organize the booths, and helped set up the tables, chairs, and the stage. The clean-up volunteers arrived around 1:00 pm and left around 3:00 pm to help disassemble the stage, dispose of the leftover materials, clean the tables, and put the chairs back. Other volunteers helped run a booth and were actively engaged with the parents and students. They explained the purpose of the activity and helped with any questions they had. The volunteers organized the materials and gave them instructions on how to complete the activity. The booth options were the balloon car, boat design, cardboard hand, earthquake tower, egg drop, and glider target.
